1755 was an unforgettable year for the people living in Pennsylvania's back country. It was the year, Indians, spurred on by the French, went on the rampage. Homes were burned, men and women killed and children kidnapped.
The Christmas Surprise by Ruth Nulton Moore tells the story of Kate, a fictional character who survived an Indian attack by hiding in the root cellar but lost her whole family. Kate went to live in the Moravian settlement at Bethlehem. There she was shocked at the Moravian's love for the Indians which led them to send missionaries into Indian villages.
The author weaves historical characters into Kate's story as she learns about the Moravian history and customs. But as the town prepares their yearly Christmas celebration, news of Indians on the warpath and headed their way, put the whole town on alert.
The miraculous deliverance of the town is seconded by the miracle of healing and love in Kate's heart.
Sadly this book, and many others by Ruth Nulton Moore are no longer in print. You can still find it at used book sellers such as Alibris. I found my copy at Paperback Swap.

Have you ever read any books by Lois Lenski? We have read several which were very good and taught good character. "Strawberry Girl" is our favorite. Along with the PA history theme is one entitled "Indian Captive:the story of Mary Jamison". Mary is captured by Indians in the Buchannan Valley near Caledonia State Park. There is a statue there in her honor you can take your children to see after reading the book.

Wow! I like the looks of this site! After marrying and moving to PA five years ago, I have been enjoying the historical sight-seeing we've done so far. Your tips and info should help me out with that and in teaching my children. Thanks!
