I've never been able to decide if the lure of Marguerite De Angeli's books are the charming lithographs or the well researched stories. Whichever it is, Pennsylvanians are blessed to have this talented author/illustrator in their state. She wrote many stories based in Pennsylvania so expect to see this author again.
Henner's Lydia is about a little Amish girl growing up in Lancaster county. The close knit family life, simple country living, one room schools, and going to market are depicted in a way that makes me want to carry a lunch bucket, hook a rug, and stir the apple butter, too.
Take a trip to Pennsylvania Dutch country and visit Henner's Lydia.

Gina- I share your love of books! Have you read this one- "Test of Faith The Jacob Hochstetler Story", by Vera Overholt?
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of that one. What is it about?

This is what the front says: "The heroic, true story of a pioneer Amish family during the French and Indian War, 1754-1763." It's got beautifully drawn pictures, and is about a family who gets an Indian attack, and not too many survive. But written so well, and focusing on Christian principles, that our extremely sensitive 10 yr. old isn't scared. It happened near Reading. -Wendy
ReplyDeleteThanks Wendy! I'll check it out!
